Jobs at the Zoo – Veterinary Technician

Jobs at the Zoo – Veterinary Technician

There are all sorts of jobs at the zoo. Veterinary technician positions may not necessarily the first job that people think of when they think of the zoo; they are more often associated with private veterinary offices, where they assist the veterinarian in caring for people’s pets. This is one type of veterinary technician, but they do also work in zoos. Zoo veterinary technicians complete compulsory education and training in exotic animals in addition to the required training for vet techs. If you are an animal lover looking for a career path in a unique environment, this could just be the right road to take.

Duties of Zoo Veterinary Technicians
As a zoo veterinary technician, your job duties would all be related to the care and supervision of animals in a zoological environment. This may include any or all of the following duties:
Administering medications
Equipment upkeep
Following directions of zoologists and zoo veterinarians
Keeping records of animals’ health
Lending support during surgeries
Maintaining inventory of medication and equipment
Monitoring the health issues of zoo animals
Parasite control procedures
Providing preventative care to animals
Supervision of care staff
Watching out for new health issues in animals Sometimes, zoo veterinary technicians are also involved in the habit development at the zoo, as well as the educational programs for the community. It all depends on the needs of the zoo and the qualifications of the vet tech. h.

How to Become a Zoo Veterinary Technician
There are stringent education and training requirements for zoo veterinary technicians, which may vary somewhat by state. You must complete a two-year veterinary technician associate’s degree program at an institution of higher learning that is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association, for starters. Zoo vet technicians also complete additional courses or electives on exotic animals. At the end of all the schooling, the graduate must also pass a licensing exam to work as a zoo veterinary technician.

Like most professions, there is quite a bit of training on the job as well. Some vet techs complete internship programs to avoid this learning curve and gain a competitive edge. The average annual salary for veterinary technicians is around $31,000, but vet techs at the zoo tend to earn a bit more due to the specialization and challenges of the job. It is a rewarding career that’s perfect for animal lovers.

Disney Destination: Orlando or California?/p>

Comparing the two Disney destinations is like comparing East Coast from West Coast. But zooming in, other than their location, there are differences that could differentiate the two attractions as unique and separate entity.

Land Area

The battle in size between the theme park giants is won by Disney World in Orlando. Disney World features over 30,000 acres of land, mostly undeveloped. As the number of visitors in the Orlando theme park increases, the introduction of new recreational parks is accelerated.

Disneyland in California started with an area of 160 acres expanding to its present size of 300 acres. Sadly, the theme park sits in the middle of a developed area with no space to expand on.

Despite its small land area, Disneyland still features a number of attractions unique in the Golden State. The World of Color is a modern addition in Disneyland that features a nighttime show with multiple marvelous fountains displaying colorful lights, fire and smoke show, and special projections.

If you are a fan of the film series Indiana Jones, you’ll prefer to go to Disneyland. The dark ride attraction originally made for the California theme park has now its replica in Tokyo DisneySea’s Temple of Crystal Skull. Other attractions in Disneyland include The Matterhorn and Alice in Wonderland.

Disneyworld houses four giant theme parks. Animal Kingdom Park holds about 250 species of animals originating from different continents contained in seven park sections. Magic Kingdom Park is Walt Disney’s very first theme park and contains six themed areas focusing on Disney classics. Similarly, the theme park Epcot is divided in sections presenting space and unique themes. Hollywood Studios comes in last but also offers similarly entertaining stage shows featuring renowned movies.

The value of each attraction relies only on the preference of the visitor. To sum it up, the decision is still on your hands to pick which of the Disney destinations can provide the more meaningful vacation. You can be influenced by many things in choosing here. You may favor the other one because of its location. Many, however, rely their choices on the excitement the theme park offers.

Chester Zoo – A Day Out With the Animals!

Chester Zoo – A Day Out With the Animals!

The quiet Cheshire countryside holds Britain’s favourite wildlife attraction the Chester Zoo. Noted as one of the fifteen best zoos in the world by Forbes in 2007, the family-owned organization is famous for its conservation efforts and displaying the biodiversity of the world in innovative ways. A visit to this zoo is a great way to spend an educative day with children of all ages.

When George Mottershead started collecting animals as a hobby, he ended up with quite a collection that needed more room. After he was wounded in the First World War, he worked to make his dream of a private zoo come true and opened Chester Zoo in 1931. Working with new ideas of Carl Hagenbeck the enclosures for the animals were not the classic Victorian cages but moats and trenches. One of its first major attractions was the Chimp Island, where the use of water was used to separate the chimps from the visitors for the first time in a zoo.

Initially just 9 acres, the zoo now covers 111 acres and can be navigated using various methods of transport. A monorail system that crisscrosses the grounds gives a great overview of all the animals. The canal network is also turned into a tour route during peak season with the water bus services. For those who want a closer look without the hassle of walking, hire a mobility scooter at the entrance.

But the stars of the place are the animals. Counting over 420 species, the zoo houses more than 9000 animals living in enclosures designed to resemble their natural habitats as closely as possible. An entire heard of Asian elephants live with monitor lizards, jungle fowl and other creatures of Asian origins. The ‘Spirit of Jaguar’ exhibit holds spotted jaguars and an elusive black panther along with tree boas and poison arrow frogs. Fruit bats, orang-utans and okapis are also animals who call this place home. Its successful chimpanzee and rhinoceros breeding programmes are well known as well.

Visiting the zoo’s extensive grounds can be a great day trip from any of the Millennium & Copthorne Hotels UK. With the seasonal and weekend offers given by the you can take the weekend off into the countryside. Several of these are situated near popular airports and stations, making for convenient transport options as well.

Knowsley Safari Park Baboons Warm Up with Baked Potatoes as Snow Hits Merseyside

Knowsley Safari Park Baboons Warm Up with Baked Potatoes as Snow Hits Merseyside

As much of the country became blanketed in snow, a heart-warming sight came from Knowsley Safari Park as their troop of baboons munched on baked potatoes in order to keep warm.

The Merseyside park, which is usually open all year round, was forced to close its gates to visitors on Monday (04/01) due to the adverse weather conditions.ns.

Despite the closure, keepers braved the snow and ice to tend to the park’s multitude of wild animals, many of which are suited to more tropical climates. In fact, the only animals that are happy to stay outdoors in all weather are the park’s collection of bison, which are used to the extreme cold of the North American winters.

As well as the piping hot baked potatoes, Knowsley Safari Park’s baboons also have access to covered housing to shield themselves from the icy conditions outside.

General Manager of Knowsley Safari Park David Ross said: “In these conditions the baboons absolutely love a baked potato. It has been fantastic to watch adults and youngsters alike collecting the steaming spuds from the keepers and enjoying something warm in the snow.

Ross added that the decision to close the park was not taken lightly. -The snow made it impossible,- he said. -It’s probably the worst conditions we’ve experienced since the mid-90s.

“But our staff battled their way in this morning, and they have been working hard to ensure all our animals are as well-fed and cosy as possible.”

Yosemite National Park Adventure

Yosemite National Park Adventure

Located in east-central California, Yosemite National Park is one of the most popular parks in the nation. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Yosemite is known for its steep waterfalls and rushing streams, its striking granite cliffs and its redwood trees, and for its rich wildlife. The park encloses 1,189 square miles, of which 95 percent is dedicated wilderness. The vast scale of Yosemite and its outdoor splendor draw in over 3.5 million nature lovers, outdoor sports enthusiasts and tourists every year.

There are a variety of ways to access the natural wonders of Yosemite National Park, the most traditional of which are its over 800 miles of hiking trails. Day hikes in the park range from easy strolls to strenuous treks up mountain sides. For the true lover of the great outdoors, the park also offers backpacking, or backcountry hiking and camping. These expeditions are multi-night, on-trail treks into the wilderness regions of the Yosemite. Backpacking in Yosemite requires a wilderness permit, and these can be reserved up to 24 weeks in advance. Reservations are strongly recommended, as some trails are occasionally booked out a full 24 weeks in advance. Yosemite is bear country, so all backpackers are required to exercise proper anti-bear precautions in the wilderness, especially regarding food.

Other options for getting into Yosemite include horseback riding and bicycling. If you’re into horseback riding you can rent your own horse, as there are trails within Yosemite designated for your use. Others interested in exploring the park from the back of a riding animal can join a guided mule ride. There are 12 miles of paved bicycle paths in Yosemite, and the park rents bikes for the use of its patrons. However, off-trail mountain biking is not permitted anywhere within Yosemite.

Yosemite is also a big draw for rock climbers. Indeed, Yosemite’s Camp 4 is one of the places where the sport was developed. Challenges in the park range from the Merced River Canyon and its sustained crack climbs to the big walls of the Valley to the stunning 3,300-foot face of El Capitan.

The Merced River also offers swimming beaches and white-water rafting during the summer months. Fishing in Yosemite is also popular, although fishing requires both a California fishing license and compliance with the park’s own rules and regulations. The fun in Yosemite does not end with the coming of winter either. While the park rarely receives enough snow to merit skis or snowshoes, several trails remain open between December and mid-March for winter hiking. If the park does receive enough snowfall, these become cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails.

Finding Park Home Insurance

Finding Park Home Insurance

Most home insurance policies will not cover a park home or residential lodge due to them being a non-permanent structure without foundations. You’ll need to shop around for a specialist park home insurance provider that can cover your structure as well as your belongings.

As park homes and lodges are not permanent, it is possible to move homes to and from the site. If your park home is damaged in a fire or flood, you would need to make sure that your insurance company will cover the cost of removing the old home and any debris as well as re-siting your new home on the park under the guidance of your park manager.

Look for policies with benefits such as ‘New for Old’ cover. This means the insurer will replace your home and contents with new should they be damaged beyond economical repair or stolen from the home. A park home specialist will replace a damaged park home with full-co-operation of the park owner.

Public liability cover may not be the first thing you look for in an insurance policy, but your park owner may specify a minimum level of cover for public liability such as 2 million or even 5 million.

Check whether legal cover is standard on the policy or whether you need to add this as an extra. Legal cover will cover the cost of pursuing civil and personal injury claims and may stretch to employment matters or consumer issues.

One of the major benefits of being retired is all the free time you have to spend and the travelling that this allows you to do. If you plan to spend long periods away from your park home, check your insurance policy covers you for leaving the home unoccupied and for what period. A standard home insurance policy may only cover your home if left unoccupied for up to 28 consecutive days. Your park home insurance should be more flexible and allow you to leave your park unoccupied for several weeks or even months at a time. But be aware of certain conditions when leaving your park home unoccupied such as steps to prevent frost damage to pipes.

As with any insurance policy, it pays to shop around and compare benefits and features as well as premium as the cheapest quote may not always give you the desired level of cover.
